The Benjamin and Charlene Ford Foundation, Inc. (BCFF) seeks to ensure that children and adults with barriers to academic support structures have localized access to K-12 educational support and adult workforce training.
Barriers to education contribute to lower academic achievement. This leads to less economic success as an adult. These adults are unable to reach higher levels of employment, and they fall into low socioeconomic status (SES) areas. Their children deal with the same disadvantages since SES and maternal education factor into academic attainment (Morgan et al., 2008, p. 411).
There are methods of ending this cycle. A study found that K-3 students assigned to higher-quality classrooms achieved higher earnings, retirement savings, and college attendance rates as adults (Chetty et al., 2011, p. 1655). Their findings show that education improves a family's trajectory. BBCF believes that all persons that desire to better themselves should have access to the services and support to do so.
BCFF provides financial support for the Building Solid Futures (BSF) program operated by 237 Enterprises, LLC. Together, we are building academic support structures and removing barriers to assist individual and family betterment.
In 2012, a survey found that around 31.8 million Americans were digitally illiterate and lacked competence with technology (as cited in Mamedova & Pawlowski, 2018). Since 74% of U.S. adults use a computer at work, these Americans are at a disadvantage when seeking a job. If they find jobs, digitally illiterate workers typically earn less money than their counterparts (Bergson-Shilcock, 2020).
BSF targets this problem by providing adult computer and workplace training. Our workforce development program supports the working poor in career acquisition and advancement.
Through career training, we can help more Americans achieve economic empowerment.
The BSF program provides academic remediation and enrichment in low socioeconomic areas. Researchers found that students from a lower socioeconomic status (SES) are more likely to display inattention, disinterest, and frustration when completing tasks (Morgan et al., 2008, p. 401). These traits may hinder a student's opportunities in a traditional classroom.
We believe all students should have enriching education. BSF provides supplemental K-12 education to low SES households with a focus on students that learn differently. These efforts help students feel empowered and allow them to thrive.
